Pizza, A Slice of American History by Pizza Therapy

Image
One day in the near future The Complete Encyclopedia of Pizza will be published. This distinguished work will contain at least 150 volumes and will explain in detail the impact pizza has had in America and the known universe.   There will be a volume on every type of pizza, including New Haven, New York, Chicago, California, Old Forge, Detroit and much more. Some volumes will be dedicated to those influential pizzaioli such as Frank Pepe , Salvatore Consiglio , Jonathan Goldsmith , John Arena , Peter Reinhart , Ike Sewell , Dom Demarco and Ed Ladue to mention but a few.  Until the Encyclopedia of Pizza is completed, you will be more than satisfied to discover Liz Barrett’s: Pizza, A Slice of American History .  This volume covers numerous types of pizza in America, those persons who influenced the regional pizza and how the various styles developed.  As a student of pizza, I was somewhat skeptical how one book could explain the history of pizza in ...

Image
If you love pizza, you have to love Adam Kuban. Well maybe not love him, but at least admire his passion for New York Pizza. Kuban has done it done it again in this amazing pizza story featuring some of the more amazing New York pizzaioli. This is an incredible video story by Adam Kuban .  He gets into the heart of the matter of pizza in his conversation with Don Antonio Starita . He pulls back the onion layers to discover the true heart of pizza. You will find many different types of pizza including a deep fried pizza.  The dough is placed in a fryer and then finished off in a wood fired oven. Simply incredible! Travel with Slice founder Adam Kuban as he checks out the gloriously fried Montanara pizza and other edibles from Don Antonio, NYC's newest Neapolitan pizzeria by Roberto Caporuscio (Keste) and Antonio Starita (Naples' Pizzeria ) As usual Kuban delivers an amazing tale with memorable tastes... Slice Grills Albert Grande About Pizza Therapy...

Image
Slice , creator Adam Kuban, recently had a sit down interview with Albert Grande, of Pizza Therapy. Here's what happened: Pizza Therapy is probably the first pizza-obsessed website I saw on the web. It's like it was always there. But when did you start it? Pizza Therapy started in 1999 on a free hosting service. It ran that way for about a year. I purchased the domain in 2000. After I registered the domain, I moved the site to our own Internet server. It's been evolving ever since. Why did you start it? The site came about as a way to honor my dad. As we were growing up my dad would make pizza for me and my friends. This continued right through high school, college and beyond. He became known as quite a good pizza maker. (He was no pro, this was homemade pizza). He loved making pizza for me and my friends. Soon his pizza making became well known and it turned into a regular event. My friends and I would hang out while my dad made pizza. The conversations an...

Start Spreading the News, Brooklyn Pizza Tour...

"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today..." OK I'm not leaving today for The City, but soon. (We'll be there in June...) And one of the Big things on our agenda is to go on The Brooklyn Pizza Tour . Honestly I can't wait. I'm looking forward to spending some quality pizza time with Tony Miura, the genius behind the tour. As a matter of fact, our friend, Adam Kuban , over at Slice , reminded us that Tony was featured on the Today Show . This is not the first time I have bought a ticket for The Brooklyn Pizza Tour . But it will be the first time I get to go. Let me explain. We had tickets to go last summer, but  Pizza Therapy  got banned from Brooklyn by Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.  True story, you can read about it here. I just got an email from Tony and he assured me all things are go for our tour date,. We're locked, loaded and ready! Here's a video of the tour: Honestly, I can't wait to try Neapolitan-style pizz...

Pizza Crawl Hawaiian Style

Image
Pizza Photo By Albert Grande, The Pizza Promoter     When the subject of pizza comes up, my ears perk up. As I tell everyone I meet, "Don't get me started about pizza...". If we're talking about pizza in Honolulu , now you really got my attention. Kawehi Haug , of The Honolulu Advertiser , organized an incredible event called The Pizza Crawl. A team was assembled to visit six Honolulu pizzerias in one night. These are pizzerias that are buzzworthy and at least have a reputation for making excellent pizza. The team was made up of hard core pizza lovers. Think about it: eating pizza from six different pizza restaurants in one night is no easy task. They were up to the challenge and they completed their mission. There were a few mis-steps along the way. Not by the team mind you, but by one of the restaurants. It just goes to show you buzz is not everything. Their results: 1) V Lounge (Kona Street) with the kiawe wood fired oven was a big hit. 2) J...

Image
"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today. I want to be part of it, New York, New York..." Ok so, I'm not leaving today, but I am leaving soon. I'm heading to the East Coast for a Pizza Tour . I'll be having some "abeets" at my favorite New Haven places: Pepe's, Sally's and Modern . I'm also going to New York to sample some of the best pizza on the planet. (OK, if you listen to Adam Kuban and Ed Levine of Slice , New York has the Best Pizza in the World !) All I can say is that I'll have to judge for myself. I've already made reservations for The Brooklyn Pizza Tour . Tony Miua is the tour guide and I had the opprtunity to interview him. Albert: Can you tell me how you came up with idea for the Brooklyn Pizza Tour? Had you thought about it for a long time? Was it a secret dream? Tony: I've been an avid traveler over the years and whenever I went abroad I would always meet locals who were nice enoug...
